Fun and Awesome Birthday present to myself(Posted on October 13, 2017) I've been flying and building rc planes since the mid 80, so I do have experience with building and flying. Anyway, I had been eyeing the larger foamies here on VH for quite some time. Several of the guys at the field had a few and really liked them, but I wanted something a little different looking. So I pulled the trigger on this right after my birthday even though I had several rc planes I was working on. Once I opened up the package I couldn't wait to start assembly as I already had all the needed electronics. Like others who have put some of these kits together, the instruction/assembly manual had quite a bit to be desired. Besides that, building was straight forward and pretty much built like other foamies using carbon fiber for extra support. What did surprise was how well the paint on the plane looked, and the colors were very defined and brilliant compared to some of the other foamies I've seen at the field. The only upgrades I did was to put on larger wheels (they were 5 spoke, a tad bigger and looked cool) and I put on a plastic tail skid. OK, so last Sunday I finally got to try this bird out. First flight I realized I needed to back off on some of my expo and it needed some slight trim. On the second flight, I had it trimmed out and calmed down the expo and it was a BLAST to fly. This is REALLY a fantastic plane for $35, and if and when I trash this one I'll definitely purchase another. I HIGHLY recommend this airplane, however it is NOT for the beginner as it has a fully symmetrical airfoil and would be difficult to learn on. If you're looking for a good foamie, especially to learn aerobatic and 3D with, this would be a GREAT plane. Hoping the weather is good this weekend........... |

Very fast build and great flyer(Posted on December 14, 2014) Search YouTube for build help. The instructions are worthless. I was a bit nervous about putting this in the air. I've recently put together a balsa 3D plane, but wanted something more durable as a first attempt. I was very pleased from the first takeoff. Sport aerobatics are a breeze and it was easier to fly than previous planes I've flown. I built this with a 78 gram 970kV motor and a APC 11x4.7SF prop. I've got unlimited vertical with this combination and a 1300mAH 3S battery. My maiden flight was in steady winds of about 10mph. Takeoff was uneventful and it responded very well to control input in both high and low (40%) rates with about 60% expo. With a Optima 7 receiver, I didn't even need servo extensions and the build ended very clean. I used Beacon QuickGrip for all of the foam and 5 minute epoxy for the plywood parts. I'll be buying another next month, just to have a spare. |

Good value and flies well(Posted on June 28, 2014) I’ve bought two of these, so I must like them. For the money, the Prime is tough to beat and it actually flies well. The instructions are fun to read because of the trippy translation, but they only give you an idea of how things go together. I just have a few comments and couple suggestions when you are gluing it up. The foam is a little heavy but very durable. I smacked my first one into the ground numerous times and only suffered just a couple tears that were easily repaired. The supplied hardware is decent, but I did replace the control horns with Dubro items. The stock horns are a little short and don’t have adequate offset to get the pivot over the hinge line on the wings. The carbon rod is usable as are the provided wire Z-bends. Enough rod is provided to allow you to brace the tail feathers if you are so inclined. The kit comes with laser cut wooden servo mount plates and aileron control horn mounts. You can use these if desired or just cut some pockets and glue the servos in place. Pay attention when gluing the fuse stiffeners in place. It’s easy to pull a bow into the fuselage. Also, line the stiffeners up with the front rather than the stab slot as you want the stiffeners to support the motor mount. The instructions say glue the motor mount together before gluing it in the fuse. I suggest you fit it up dry, check it in the fuse, and make sure you don’t put weird thrust in the motor. Then slather the whole thing with glue and mount it in the fuse. When mounting the wing, trim the foam flashing between the ailerons. This makes it much easier to get the wing in place. CA hinges are provided for the rudder. These work OK, but you could probably use tape if you prefer. Finally, the elevator and rudder servo locations are not very well defined. I mounted them both within 6 inches of the tail and was able to get the plane to balance by moving the battery. That’s about it. Good 3D trainer and if you strain it through a chain link fence one too many times, a replacement is only $35 away. |
